People in the west save a lot of money on electricity and gas. Adopt their procedures and you will save thousands of crowns

The situation on the energy market surprised us all, but we have no choice but to accept this fact as a fact and try to get out of it with as few losses as possible.

How to save on gas

About 2.6 million households in our country are connected to natural gas. Of that, 2/3 uses gas for heating, and 1/3 for cooking and heating water. If you are one of them, be sure to call a service technician to your home. In order for your gas boiler to function optimally, it needs regular cleaning and servicing.

Save the most on heating

As it is written everywhere, we spend the most money on heating. When you reduce just the temperature on the thermostat one degree, save 5-10% of gas consumption for heating.

Bleed the radiators. If the boiler is running at full speed and the radiators are gassed, you will not get heat. You can see that the water heater will be hot at the control valve, but cold at the other end.

Do not place furniture in front of the radiator, let the heat flow into the room. Your curtains should ideally end above the heating element. If you only have parquet or floating floors on the ground, get rugs for the winter, because the warmth of your feet increases the temperature you feel.

Ventilate with a short draft

Ventilate with a short draft, perhaps several times a day, but not with a fan, when the air you exhale does not change, but the heat goes away. Check window and door seals. If they don’t fit somewhere, hobby markets sell self-adhesive sealing tapes that you can use to fix the problem for a few kroner. Cover windows and doors with thermal insulation film.

Save on cooking

Cook with a lid, without it the cooking time is unnecessarily extended. Use papyrus. Place small pots on small burners. Do not heat more water than you need. Potatoes or eggs do not have to swim in it. Heat water in a boiler, it is more economical than a gas stove.

How to save on electricity

If you heat with electricity, the advantage is that you don’t have to worry about an audit, but otherwise follow the same precautions as with gas heating.

Check your devices

You must have already read how important it is to have appliances of a higher energy class. Last year, the original scale was replaced by a new one, the A+++ – G mark disappeared, now there is only A – G. For some devices, the highest class is still missing, so there is room for technical progress in the future. So, for example, currently the most economical dishwasher carries the B class label.

Try to have a full fridge

Do not place the refrigerator next to a radiator or other device that produces heat. Keep the temperature in the refrigerator at 7 °C. A lower temperature will increase your consumption, but it is not necessary. It’s also interesting to note that the emptier your fridge and freezer are, the more energy they use, as frozen or cold food helps keep the temperature down. Defrost the refrigerator regularly.

Dry your laundry outside

Turn on the washing machine only when it is full and wash as often as possible at 30-40°C. Modern powders can handle pollution. Therefore, it is no longer necessary to cook or pre-wash. If possible, dry clothes outside. The dryer is one of the biggest energy guzzlers.

LED bulbs consume up to 90% less energy than conventional ones. You can buy a traditional light bulb for a few crowns, but its lifetime is only 1000 ha, and the price of annual operation with 4 hours of lighting per day is about 400 CZK. On the other hand, an LED bulb costs about 100 CZK, but its lifetime is 15,000 h, and the annual operating cost with 4 hours of illumination is only 63 CZK. And we are talking about one light bulb.

Shut down everywhere behind you. Take a shower instead of a bath. Use the residual heat from the iron or hob when you turn it off 10 minutes earlier. Iron only what is really necessary.

Don’t be lazy

Turn off devices from standby mode. For example, a monitor in stand-by mode consumes 0.5 Wh every hour when it is not completely turned off. If it works only four hours a day and twenty hours in stand-by mode, you lose 3600 Wh of energy per year. And we often have TVs, audio and video players, game consoles, set-top boxes and others in this mode. The easiest solution is to buy an extension cable with a switch. Do not forget chargers for mobile phones and laptopswhich they draw power from the outlet, even though they are not connected to the device.
